When training for a marathon, runners often focus heavily on distance, pace, and shoe choice—but foot strength and flexibility are just as important. The feet absorb thousands of impacts with each run, and without adequate strength and mobility, they become vulnerable to common injuries like plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, and Achilles tendinopathy. Integrating specific foot-focused exercises into your training plan can go a long way in building resilience and preventing breakdown.
At Peninsula Performance Physio, we work with runners to build stronger, more resilient feet.
Strengthening the Foot Muscles
Strengthening the intrinsic muscles of the foot helps stabilise the arch and improve force distribution during each step. Exercises like short foot holds (where you draw the ball of the foot towards the heel without curling your toes), toe spreading, and single-leg balance work challenge the small stabilising muscles that often get neglected. Strong foot muscles reduce reliance on passive structures like fascia and ligaments, lowering injury risk as mileage increases.
Improving Mobility and Flexibility
Equally important is maintaining adequate mobility in the foot and ankle. Tight calves and stiff plantar fascia can alter gait mechanics and increase strain on tissues further up the chain. Daily stretching of the plantar fascia (by pulling back the toes), calf stretches against the wall, and rolling the foot on a lacrosse ball can release tension and restore normal movement. Think of stretching as “resetting” the foot for the load ahead.
Building a routine for Long-Term Foot Health
Including 5–10 minutes of foot-focused exercises and mobility work a few times a week is a simple but powerful way to future-proof your running. Just like you wouldn’t skip a long run or strength session for your glutes or core, your feet deserve the same level of care. Strong, supple feet aren’t just injury-resistant—they’re also more efficient, giving you a solid foundation to run stronger and longer on race day.
