What Does a Pelvic Floor Physio Do?

Pelvic Floor Physio

What is a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist

A pelvic floor specialist physiotherapist is a healthcare professional who specialises in the assessment and treatment of conditions related to the pelvic floor muscles. They are trained to evaluate and address issues such as pelvic pain, urinary or fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and sexual dysfunction. These specialists use a variety of techniques, including manual therapy, exercises, biofeedback, and education, to help patients improve their pelvic floor function and alleviate symptoms. They may also provide guidance on lifestyle modifications and offer advice on managing and preventing pelvic floor problems.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

During an initial consultation with a pelvic floor physiotherapist, several key steps are typically followed. Firstly, the physiotherapist will gather a comprehensive medical history, including information about any symptoms or concerns related to the pelvic floor. They may ask questions about bladder and bowel function, pain or discomfort in the pelvic region, sexual health, and any relevant medical conditions or surgeries.

Next, the physiotherapist will conduct a physical examination, which may involve assessing the strength, tone, and coordination of the pelvic floor muscles. This can be done through internal or external palpation, depending on the patient’s comfort level and the nature of the concern. The physiotherapist may also assess other areas such as posture, alignment, and movement patterns that could contribute to pelvic floor dysfunction.

Based on the findings from the history and examination, the physiotherapist will then develop an individualised treatment plan. This plan may include a combination of techniques such as pelvic floor exercises, manual therapy, biofeedback, education on bladder and bowel habits, and lifestyle modifications. The physiotherapist will explain the recommended interventions and answer any questions the patient may have.

Creating a Safe and Supportive Environment

Throughout the initial consultation, the pelvic floor physiotherapist will prioritise creating a safe and comfortable environment for the patient to discuss their concerns openly. They will also ensure that the patient understands the importance of their active participation in the treatment process and the potential benefits of pelvic floor rehabilitation.
